Surefire flashlights are good but expensive. I would suggest taking a look at Pelican flashlights. I was in Iraq for 3 years in situations I can't explain - but I had 3 of the little Pelicans that were about $10 each and they use 2-AAA batteries. I still have them today. I have one taped under my Harley for emergencies, on my key-ring, and the other hangs by the front door inside my house.
